چکیده

This paper studies the design and performance of the Probabilistic Priority (PP) [9] packet scheduling algorithm to schedule packets. Unlike an earlier design that uses fractional arithmetic and prohibits large number of classes, we present an integer PP algorithm and show that PP turns out to be a special scheme of applying lottery scheduling [16] to bandwidth allocation in a strict priority sense. We then propose a Multi-winner PP (MPP) scheduler using multi-winner lottery scheduling to improve the throughput and response time accuracy. We also propose a technique to reduce the deadline violation probability in probabilistic scheduling. Simulations show that our algorithms provide lower delays for most classes and improved bandwidth guarantee than lottery scheduling and strict prioritization. Finally, we investigate the issue of parameter assignment for an MPP scheduler and use our techniques to implement a prototype Assured Forwarding (AF) mechanism in a high-speed network processor with memory and computing constraint.

Analysis of Prioritized Scheduling of Assured Forwarding in DiffServ Architectures

Assured Service has been proposed within the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) model to provide relative service differentiation by attempting to allocate bandwidth to different users in a controlled way during periods of network congestion. In this paper, we analyze the Assured Service scheme by means of a priority queueing system with statedependent service scheduling based on thresholds. We...

Dynamic fair bandwidth allocation for DiffServ classes

The Assured Forwarding Per Hop Behavior standardized by the IETF Differentiated Services working group provides four class-based differentiated IP services. In this service, however, unexpected service degradation may occur and differentiation among classes may be disordered if the network is designed to minimize over-provisioning or is under-provisioned. We therefore developed a packet schedul...

A Quantitative Assured Forwarding Service

The Assured Forwarding (AF) service of the IETF DiffServ architecture provides a qualitative service differentiation between classes of traffic, in the sense that a low-priority class experiences higher loss rates and higher delays than a high-priority class. However, the AF service does not quantify the difference in the service given to classes. In an effort to strengthen the service guarante...
